Death Valley National Park, Part 3

On our 3rd day here we drove out toward Stovepipe Wells to do another hike.
On the way we passed the Mesquite Flat Sand Dunes.
And made the turn toward Mosaic Canyon.
"Mosaics" of fragments of rocks cemented together can be seen in canyon walls.

Parts of this canyon are narrow with polished marble walls.
 Mosaics

There is a ladder here...to keep your head above water during a flash flood?
 Polished marble walls.
The ladder seems to be missing some rungs.

 Some slickrock scrambling is necessary.
 That's a BIG step.
My legs aren't that long. But even Birdie couldn't get up that way.
 Maybe over here?
She ended up going the same way I had to...on her knees.

Another area of slickrock. I went straight ahead.
 Birdie looked for another way.

 She made it.

The canyon widens out to a sunny "cathedral."
 It was getting hot.
I found a shady spot to wait, then we agreed to turn around.
 Heading back down the canyon.
Wildlife. Kept looking for the Desert Mountain Sheep, but saw none.
Birdie found an easier way down the slickrock.
 Sliding!

Cement-like mosaic on top of the polished marble.
 Mosaic Canyon.
One more post coming about the 20-Mule Team Borax mining.

  1. I can see why it is "Death Valley".....that's a lot of rock and sun.
